2005
Honorable Carlos M. Gutierrez
Leadership

From sales rep to the youngest-ever CEO at the Kellogg Company, Honorable Gutierrez took Kellogg Company to new heights.

Subsequently, he rose to serve as a core member of President George W. Bush's economic team. As the first Hispanic to be Secretary of the U.S. Department of Commerce, Honorable Gutierrez oversees a diverse Cabinet agency with nearly 38,000 workers and a $6.5 billion budget focused on promoting American business at home and abroad. In light of a career that began by selling cereal boxes out of a car in Mexico city, President Bush said that Honorable Gutierrez "understands the world of business, from the first rung on the ladder to the very top. He knows exactly what it takes to help American businesses grow and to create jobs." President Bush has also called Honorable Gutierrez a "visionary executive."

A priority for Honorable Gutierrez in his position is to open international markets to U.S. companies in order to create jobs and build a stronger America. "We have the best people, we have the training, and we have the culture. I believe the 21st century is really and truly the American century." Honorable Gutierrez, born in Havana, Cuba, came to America with his family after being exiled from Fidel Castro's 1960 regime. He studied business administration at the Monterrey Institute of Technology in Queretaro, Mexico.
