When we think of exciting soccer matches, we can almost hear the crowds roar as the announcer yells ?Goooooooooaaaaal!? We do so thanks to Argentine descent Andres Cantor who has infused sports announcing with an unprecedented passion and zeal. Indeed, it was Cantor's distinct style that led to a peculiar phenomenon during the 1994 and 1998 World Cup games: TV audiences tuned in to listen to Cantor?s thrilling play-by-plays.
Cantor has been described as a key figure in the growing awareness of soccer in the United States. His distinguished track record as a sports journalist is highlighted by coverage of five World Cups and two European Cups. He was recently named the one of the most influential people in soccer by Soccer America magazine, and has been featured on LIVE with Regis and Kathie Lee and The Late Show with David Letterman. Cantor has received international recognition for his work, including being named ?Sports Personality of the Year? in 1994 by the American Sportscaster Association, the same year he won an Emmy for individual achievement for his play-by-play of the World Cup.
Recently, at the Athens Olympics, Cantor was part of the reporting team, and could be heard on his daily syndicated radio program, F?tbol de Primera, which is broadcast in 40 markets in the U.S. Later this year, he will also break new ground for Hispanic talent as the executive producer and host of a prime-time reality series on Telemundo. Aside from his busy work schedule, Cantor graciously dedicates hours of his free time to charitable causes including the Hispanic Heritage Youth Awards.
