Dr. Hilda Perera
Literature

Hilda Perera, the 1994 Hispanic Heritage Awards Honoree for Literature, was considered the most outstanding and prolific Hispanic writer of the 20th Century.

Hilda has written 33 books, including six novels and 19 children’s books. Her textbooks on Latin American literature have been extensively referenced and used in college courses and public schools throughout the United States and Puerto Rico.

Her most popular books include Kike, the story of a little boy’s adaptation to life in the United States, Mai, the story of a Vietnamese girl who was adopted by a Cuban couple in Miami, and La Jaula del Unicornio, the story of an undocumented immigrant who crosses the Rio Grande to get to the United States. Hilda has also used her creative literary talents in her extensive work as a journalist for Diario las Américas.

Hilda has received many honors recognizing her works, including a nomination for the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1993.
